I was commissioned to illustrate a map covering Northern Ireland which would be published for Brussels airline, inflight magazine. The illustrated map would show the sights and tourist interests such as Belfast the Titanic Centre, Bushmills Distillery, The Giant’s Causeway, Carrick a Rede rope bridge, Giant’s Causeway, Portrush, Portstewart, and Dunluce Castle.
The Northern Ireland map was an interesting map to work on for me. The illustrated map I have worked on in the past, I would draw the place on interest on to the map, this works well if there is space for the locations to work within the composition of the illustration. The design problem I encountered with the Northern Ireland map was with the difficulty of placing the locations within the magazine dimensions. The solution to this problem was to crop the location drawings and place them within floating image shapes. This approach worked with the available space and composition without compromising the map.
