Portos Iconic Landmarks Illustrated. Creating an illustrated map of Porto has been a deeply rewarding, creative, and personal experience. My connection to Porto runs deeper than just a fleeting visit; I lived there in early 2021, immersing myself in the city’s vibrant culture and unique charm. This map is not only a reflection of the city’s iconic landmarks but also a tribute to my time living as a local in this enchanting Portuguese metropolis.
The journey began with a personal exploration of Porto. My days were filled with walking through its winding streets, visiting its historic neighbourhoods, and experiencing the city’s lively atmosphere. I took extensive notes and sketches, capturing the essence of Porto from a local’s perspective. The city’s beauty and character were so captivating that I knew I wanted to share my experience through art.
The process of illustrating the map started with detailed hand-drawn sketches of key locations. I focused on landmarks that had become significant to me during my stay, such as the historic Ribeira district, with its charming, narrow streets and colourful buildings. The Dom Luís I Bridge, an architectural marvel, and the Livraria Lello, renowned for its stunning interior, were also central to my illustrations. São Bento Station, with its intricate tile work, and the Clerigos Tower, offering panoramic views of the city, rounded out the landmarks I aimed to include.
Once the initial drawings were completed, the next step was to digitize them. I meticulously scanned and refined each illustration using graphic design software, ensuring that the vibrant colours and intricate details were preserved. The digital format allowed me to experiment with different compositions and colours, bringing the map to life with a vivid and engaging aesthetic.
As I composed the various elements into a cohesive map, I felt a profound nostalgia and connection to the city I had grown to love. Each stroke of colour and line on the map represents not just a location but a memory, a moment, and a piece of Porto’s soul.
This illustrated map is more than a visual representation; it’s a heartfelt homage to Porto and a celebration of my time there. It’s a joy to share my journey and offer others a chance to explore the city through my eyes, appreciating its charm and character as I did.
