Illustrated Map of Fisher Island. I was delighted to be commissioned by &Partners to create a bespoke illustrated map of Fisher Island for their client, highlighting the exclusive destination’s iconic locations in a clean and refined visual style. With Marissa Bronstein leading the art direction, the brief was clear: the map needed to be elegant, minimal, and timeless — reflecting the prestige and character of Fisher Island without overcomplicating the layout.
The process began with hand-drawn illustrations — my preferred starting point for any map or location-based piece. I used fine liners to sketch the buildings, palm trees, boats, and landmarks, capturing their structure with clean lines and subtle textures. Each detail, from the architectural grandeur of the Vanderbilt Mansion to the relaxed charm of the Beach Club & Restaurants, was drawn to suggest sophistication while keeping the visual noise low.
Once the illustrations were complete, I scanned and composed the entire map in Photoshop. This phase was all about balance — aligning the key landmarks, creating a fluid layout of roads and pathways, and ensuring that the map felt natural and uncluttered. We made the creative decision to keep the palette largely monochromatic, accented with light watercolour washes of green for the golf course and trees, and soft blue for the surrounding waters — just enough colour to bring the island to life while maintaining a classic, minimal aesthetic.
Key points of interest included The Links Golf Course & Club (complete with a golf cart sketch), the Spa Internazionale, the Victor Arsidi Observatory, and the elegant Fisher Island Day School. We also featured ferries, yachts near the marinas, racquet courts, and even a tennis racket to help identify the Racquet Club. Palm trees were used throughout to lend a sense of location and atmosphere without crowding the space.
Working with Marissa and the &Partners team was a smooth and collaborative experience. Feedback was thoughtful and constructive, and we worked closely to fine-tune positioning, proportions, and clarity — especially important given the map’s role as a printed and digital reference for the island’s most prominent features.
This project was a study in restraint — showcasing how less really can be more. The final artwork is elegant, readable, and reflective of Fisher Island’s luxurious tone, offering a clear and welcoming visual guide that complements the brand’s refined image.
