I was thrilled to be commissioned by Decanter magazine to illustrate a double-page map for a special feature exploring the Camino de Santiago – the historic pilgrimage route that travels across northern Spain, celebrated not only for its spiritual significance but also for its rich regional food and wine.
Every project I undertake begins with pen on paper. The foundation of this piece was no different – detailed black-and-white line drawings using fine liners. I focused on capturing the unique architectural essence of each location: the soaring Gothic lines of Burgos Cathedral, the Romanesque and Baroque beauty of Santiago de Compostela, and the intricate facade of León’s cathedral. These hand-drawn illustrations formed the visual anchors of the map.
After scanning the artwork, I transitioned into the digital stage, composing the map in Photoshop. This is where the work comes to life in colour – arranging landmarks, layering regional dishes, mapping the pilgrimage path, and weaving atmospheric details into the composition. It’s always a balance of aesthetic flow and geographical accuracy.
Each stop along the Camino was represented by a key landmark and local delicacy – from the tapas-lined streets of Logroño with its signature champiñones and Rioja, to León’s famous cecina, and the finishing point of Santiago de Compostela with pilgrims’ backpacks and a plate of pulpo á feira. I also added subtle storytelling elements: walkers along the route, vine-covered hillsides, and the Bay of Biscay framing the top of the spread.
Collaboration was key to the success of the illustration. Working closely with Patrick and the Decanter team, we refined the composition to ensure clarity across the double-page format, carefully accounting for gutter spacing and editorial text placement. Their clear brief and insightful feedback made the process smooth and rewarding.
This piece was not only about visual storytelling – it was about celebrating the journey, culture, and cuisine of a remarkable part of the world. I’m proud to have captured the essence of the Camino de Santiago in a way that invites readers to follow the path – through both flavour and history – one illustrated step at a time.
