I was commissioned to illustrate a map covering Northern Ireland which would be published for Brussels airline inflight magazine. The illustrated map would highlight sights of interests such as Belfast the Titanic Centre, Bushmills Distillery, The Giant’s Causeway, Carrick a Rede rope bridge, Giant’s Causeway, Portrush, Portstewart, and Dunluce Castle.
The Northern Ireland map was an interesting map to work on stylistically for me. The maps I have illustrated in the past, I would place the location on to the map, this works well if there is space for the locations to work within the composition. The issue with the Northern Ireland map was with the difficulty of placing the locations with in the magazine dimensions. The solution for this issue was to crop the location drawings and place them within floating image bubbles. This stylistic approach worked with the available space and composition with out compromising the map.
The Map was drawn into individual as sections. The roads were then drawn first separate to the rest of the illustration. The spot illustrations were then drawn using a fine liner ink Rotring pen. I then started to place the spot illustrations onto the road layout of the illustration.
Once the composition of the map-drawing was working well I started to add the typography into the illustration. The location names were illustrated under the locations in a hand-rendered font using.
