Illustrated Map British GQ Magazine Artist David Hockney Los Angeles Favorite Hangouts
Illustrated Map British GQ Magazine map artist David Hockney Los Angeles Map Drawing. I was approached by the editor for GQ Magazine to illustrate a Location Map of Los Angeles iconic sites. In addition to the well-known site of LA, the visual references within the illustration of David Hockney sites – eg the Museum of Modern Art, LA Louver Gallery, and The Hotel Roosevelt.
LA has many well recognized stylized ‘LA’ typographic signage for example like the Beverly Hills hotel, Roosevelt, Hollywood the Hollywood Sign, were also drawn as part of the illustration brief to add as spot illustrations.
I was given a list of other points of interest to include in the LA map which also included, Venice Beach, Lawry’s ‘Prime Rib’ a nice big piece of Prime Rib was drawn for fun to represent this.
The map was drawn loosely as a representation of LA.
The Map was drawn into individual sections. First, the spot illustrations were drawn using a fine liner ink pen. The streets were then drawn separate from the illustration as well. I then started to place the spot illustrations onto the street layout.
Once the composition of the map-drawing was working well I started to add the typography into the illustration. The location names were illustrated under the locations in a script font using a brush pen.
