Illustrated Map British GQ Magazine Artist David Hockney Los Angeles Favorite Hangouts
When the editor of GQ Magazine sought an illustrated map capturing the essence of Los Angeles Map Drawing, they turned to me for this artistic endeavour. The task at hand was to create a visual guide to iconic LA landmarks, including the sites associated with the renowned artist David Hockney, such as the Museum of Modern Art, LA Louver Gallery, and The Hotel Roosevelt.
Los Angeles, a city of visual wonders, is home to a myriad of distinctive typographic signage. From the legendary Beverly Hills Hotel to the iconic Roosevelt and Hollywood Sign, these recognizable ‘LA’ letterforms were incorporated into the illustration, enhancing its visual appeal.
The canvas of this map expanded beyond David Hockney‘s world to include other points of interest that define LA’s unique charm. From the vibrant Venice Beach to the indulgent Lawry’s ‘Prime Rib,’ each location was brought to life through meticulous illustration.
The process unfolded in sections. First, fine-line ink pens were employed to craft intricate spot illustrations, while the city’s streets were meticulously charted on a separate canvas. As the pieces fell into place, typography was introduced, with location names elegantly rendered in a fluid script font using a brush pen.
This map is more than a geographical reference; it’s a testament to the creative spirit of Los Angeles, a vibrant tapestry of art, culture, and iconic landmarks. As you explore the visual journey curated by GQ Magazine, may this map serve as your artistic guide to the mesmerizing world of David Hockney’s Los Angeles.
