Working Mother Magazine
Working Mother, is a New York-based women’s magazine, I was contacted by the editor who was looking to brief me for a series of illustrations in a way that exemplifies diversity and the challenges it poses as well for their upcoming article centred on the topic of Multicultural Women.
The Multicultural Women package focuses on the role women of ethnicity in the workforce, from getting hired for a job to getting promoted to one day running the company or sitting on the board of directors. The article focuses on, what the most progressive companies are doing to grow and support a diverse workforce as well as some of the specific challenges that multicultural women face at work as “double outsiders” — i.e. as both female and a minority.
The direction for the working mother illustration artwork should maintain the multicultural theme throughout the illustrations for the article. I choose to incorporate an ethnic woman’s profile, which reflected the core aspect of the article, and I focused on the illustration with ethnic-inspired icons and motifs, which were developed into the woman’s profile and around the page. The colours for the Working Mother Magazine consisted of bolder and vibrant colour palette, I incorporated some more deep earth tones and a strong red colour for the woman’s profile, which was the main focus of the illustration, an article.
