Split Croatia Travel Drawings
Split, Croatia, is a dream destination for travellers who find inspiration in history, architecture, and scenic beauty. The heart of this vibrant city lies within its Old Town, where ancient Roman ruins seamlessly blend with modern life. As an artist, I found myself captivated by the charm of this city and couldn’t resist the urge to sketch some of its most iconic landmarks, particularly the magnificent bell tower of the Cathedral of Saint Domnius.
Split Croatia Travel Drawings. The Old Town, centred around Diocletian’s Palace, is a maze of narrow streets, ancient arches, and weathered stone walls. Walking through the remnants of the Roman empire, I was struck by the level of craftsmanship that has stood the test of time. The towering columns of the Roman church and the remnants of temples speak of a civilization deeply rooted in art and engineering. Each stone and column seemed to tell a story, and I felt a profound connection to the history unfolding before me.
One of the most awe-inspiring structures I chose to sketch was the bell tower. Its intricate details and slender arches reflect centuries of history, making it a perfect subject for capturing the essence of Romanesque architecture. Climbing to the top of the tower was as inspiring as the sketch itself, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the city and the shimmering Adriatic Sea beyond.
Another feature that drew my attention was the Iron Gate, one of the four original gates of Diocletian’s Palace. The textured metalwork and weathered stone frame, are a reminder of how beauty lies not only in perfection but also in age and patina.
As I sketched, the city hummed around me—locals chatting in cafes, street musicians playing, and boats coming and going from the harbour. Split is not just a collection of ruins but a living, breathing city that pulses with energy and life. Sitting with my sketchpad, I felt immersed in both the ancient world and the present moment, an experience I will carry with me through my art.
Whether you’re an artist or simply a traveller, Split’s stunning architecture and lively atmosphere are sure to leave you inspired.
