As an illustrator deeply intertwined with the pulsating core of London, every project embarks me on a unique creative odyssey. Recently, I had the privilege of contributing to the Financial Times’ Arts section, illustrating an article on Andrew O’Hagan’s novel, “Caledonian Road.” This endeavor not only showcased my artistic prowess but also allowed me to encapsulate the very essence of London’s urban sprawl.
Featured in the Financial Times’ weekend edition on March 30-31, my illustration offers a detailed glimpse of Caledonian Road, gazing towards Kings Cross. Through meticulous hand-drawing and digital composition in Photoshop, I aimed to capture the vibrant energy and diverse character of this iconic London thoroughfare.
“Caledonian Road,” O’Hagan’s seventh novel, weaves a Dickensian narrative with satirical threads akin to Thackeray’s “Vanity Fair.” Set against the backdrop of London in May 2021, the story paints a vivid portrait of the city through its eclectic inhabitants. At its core lies Campbell Flynn, a 52-year-old art historian—a complex character mirroring the intellectual depth and bohemian spirit of London itself.
With each stroke, I endeavored to convey the rich tapestry of life defining Caledonian Road. From its bustling streets to eclectic architecture and diverse populace, my illustration aimed to evoke a profound sense of place and belonging within the pages of the Financial Times.
