A Walk Through Borough Illustrated Map SE1. Nestled along the River Thames, London’s Borough district is one of the city’s most vibrant and character-rich areas — and that’s exactly what inspired my illustrated Borough Map. This colourful, hand-drawn piece brings together some of the most iconic landmarks, pubs, and streets of SE1 into a single, easy-to-navigate visual guide. Whether you’re a visitor looking to explore or a local rediscovering the charm of your neighbourhood, this map celebrates the personality and walkability of Borough.
At the heart of the map is Borough Market, the historic and bustling centre for food lovers. Surrounding it are some of the area’s most beloved pubs — The Market Porter, The Globe Tavern, and The Lord Clyde, each drawn with architectural detail to highlight their heritage and individuality. The illustration also features cultural landmarks like Southwark Cathedral, The Shard, and Shakespeare’s Globe, rooting the map in the artistic and historical legacy of the area.
I wanted to create more than just a traditional map — this is a visual story. It’s infused with elements of everyday London life: red double-decker buses, black cabs, street signs like Clink Street and Park Street, and people casually walking or cycling. These small but meaningful details bring a sense of movement and connection to the area, reflecting how easily you can get from one iconic spot to the next. It’s a reminder that Borough is best experienced on foot, taking in the textures, sounds, and spirit of the neighbourhood as you go.
The colour palette is intentionally lively yet grounded, drawing on the natural tones of the city’s architecture, the greenery of the market stalls, and the bold reds and blacks associated with London’s transport system. My hope was to balance whimsy with usefulness — making this a map you’d want to hang on your wall, but also one that could guide you through a perfect afternoon of pub-hopping and sightseeing.
Ultimately, this illustration is a love letter to Borough. It captures the unique charm of a place where history and modernity sit side by side, where you’re never far from a pint, a landmark, or a hidden gem down a cobbled lane. Whether you’re a tourist or a local, I hope this piece inspires you to explore, pause, and appreciate the beauty tucked into every corner of Borough.
