Travel Drawings Split Croatia. Split, Croatia, is a dream destination for travellers seeking inspiration in history, architecture, and natural beauty. At the heart of this vibrant city lies the Old Town, where ancient Roman ruins blend seamlessly with the rhythms of modern life. As an artist, I was captivated by Split’s unique charm, feeling drawn to sketch its most iconic landmarks and hidden corners. One such place that stood out to me was Radić Brothers Square, also known as Fruit Square (Voćni trg), a quiet yet intriguing piazza nestled away from the bustling promenade.
The Old Town, centred around Diocletian’s Palace, is a maze of narrow streets, weathered arches, and ancient stone walls, all steeped in history. Walking through the remnants of the Roman Empire, I marvelled at the craftsmanship that has endured through centuries. The remnants of temples and Roman structures reflect a civilization deeply rooted in art and architecture, each stone telling its own story. These layers of history made Split a rich and inspiring place to sketch.
Travel Drawings Split Croatia. Radić Brothers Square, located just off the promenade behind the cafes, offered a peaceful spot to sit and draw. The piazza is slightly inclined, with four small lanes leading in and out of it, and in the centre stands the historic Mletački kaštel tower, a reminder of Split’s Venetian past. The nearby palace, known for its elegance and preserved stonework, added to the square’s architectural richness. Shops and restaurants line the piazza, and their facades became the focal point of my sketch. I chose to sketch the architecture of these buildings, focusing on the lines and shapes of the structures rather than the people. My lines were intentionally loose and sketchy, capturing the character of the facades, from the textured stonework to the weathered windows. The interplay of light and shadow on the buildings added depth to the scene, making it a rewarding subject.
As I sketched, the vibrancy of the city surrounded me. Locals gathered in nearby cafes, while street musicians played, their melodies drifting through the air. The blend of ancient architecture and lively modern culture created a perfect backdrop for artistic inspiration.
Whether you’re an artist or simply a traveller, Split’s stunning architecture, rich history, and vibrant atmosphere are sure to leave you inspired.
