Map for INK
I was commissioned Scholastic UK to illustrate a map for Alice Broadway’s upcoming young adult novel, INK, which is set in a dystopian world similar to The Hunger Games. It was my goal to create a piece that complemented the tone and narrative of her novel while adding my own visual interpretation of her words.
There are many fictional locations that the publishing house wanted depicting on the map, including:
- Hospital
- Museum
- Government Building
- Obels studio
- Bakery
- Shops
- Market
- School
- Coffeehouse
- School
- Housing District
INK is the first novel in a trilogy which is set in a world where people must be tattooed with their own life stories. When they die, their skin is made into a book. The first book in Broadway’s series is about a woman named Leora who wants to ensure that her father is remembered forever after his death. However, when his book is confiscated, she discovers a dark secret and she is left to wonder if she really knew him at all.
“The idea is hugely, darkly compelling – a world where every action and deed is marked on your skin and nothing can go unnoticed,” says Genevieve Herr, Commissioning Editor at Scholastic UK. “But it’s Alice’s execution that is extraordinary – her writing is so accomplished and beautiful, and her world is so rich, that we believe in it absolutely. I’m so excited to have acquired Ink and can’t wait to work on it with Alice.”
With such an innovative idea from a talented new author, it was my duty to create an illustration in line with her vision. The map appears in the first few pages of INK, so readers can flip back to the beginning and reference it any time. INK is now available in paperback and for Kindle on Amazon.
